Throughout history, dolls were used for entertainment, but also as ritual objects, concealing possibilities that a real person did not have. Because dolls live in a space without any rules or boundaries, they free us to develop personal mythologies, to explore and mediate painful experiences, and then to project ways to overcome trauma, and create new and better stories for our characters and ourselves. The creation of art dolls in my artistic practice has helped me to tap into a childlike imagination to process emotion, to help develop my creativity and to create dialogue within myself. Dolls are a conduit for fantasy. They move in ways we can’t or don’t or won’t, they shout, exclaim, and declare things we do not dare vocalize in our day to day lives.
